Come with a job description to the job interview. Do not ask the interviewer for a job description. Most of the international NGO will ask you to provide as a job description.  To look that you are well prepared, motivated, you must carry a copy of the job description, your resume and application sent to the interview. It is also advisable that you have a copy of the job description as the time of your job application to apply professionally.

Be prepared for short interview notice. The hiring organization does not do this just because of poor planning but to test you if you can work under pressure in little time. This is mostly how the international NGOs work . They deliver service under pressure and time with not enough time to learn the job or the crisis situation such as disaster and armed conflict.

Take not of the cultural differences. Speak very well and do not feel shy. The interviewers understands most of the cultural issued but you need also to lay your part.

Be prepared to speak in more than one language in an interview. Most of the international NGO requires two languages English and a national language. Be ready to answer  the interview questions in any of the languages.

Be able to forecast what question that you may be asked in an interview. Look at the most frequently asked questions or common interview questions and prepare how you are going to answer them.

Formulate your answers and practice before the interview with a friend or try with a mirror in front of you.

Prepare your answer with STAR level or CARL level.  To answer interview questions appropriately,  you must answer inform of brief situation or context, give the action that you have taken as individuals, then what was the results of your action and finally the lesson that you have learned from those actions.

Show that you are competent  for the job. Show that the you have the right skills and competence by refereeing to the ones put in place in the job descriptions. The qualifications, the skills and the experience that they are looking for.

Never try to answer phone interview question from prepared ones. Be genuine and try to remember what you have practiced from.

This is a type of interview majorly used by the international NGO to select the best interviewee for a job position. The interview is based competence test of the job candidates. It assesses the previous work performance of the interviewee in the previous similar positions. International NGOs belief that the applicant previous performance is a reliable indicator that he is going to similarly performance well in the future tasks or any work given. This method is also called situational or behavioral interviewing methods

Most of the NGO use this method of job interview mainly because it is cheap and produces reliable workers at low cost. The interview Compose of several process of interview which proceeds from a written technical test.

Sample Questions: Tell me about a time that you were part of successful team? What makes that team successful? What was your role in that team? How did you cover come problems in that team?

First Step: You have read the job description of that vacancy. Because the vacancy contains all the skills and competency required in that vacancy which are also form the answer you should give that the interviewers wants to hear from you. Try to print or keep a soft copy of it. Because after some time when you are called for an interview you will not find that job description online or on the notice board again.

Second Step: when preparing for the interview, prepare to answer in Context Action and Result form (CAR) or Situation, Action and result form (STAR). This about giving brief situation or context, then action taken as your role not the team and finally the results of your action, most of the candidates forget to add their results. Sometimes the fourth thing to add on is that Learning. What lesson have you learned from your actions If you structure your answers this way then you are giving the interviewers what they are looking for and want to hear.
Basically, the panel interviewers are looking for someone who is agreeable fit the position and not a nut.

Methods of competency Job Interview

Phone or Skype Most of the international NGO tend to interview you on Phone or Skype. in such situation you need to stand up rather than sitting and project your voice for the other person to hear you very well.

Face to face interview: If you are doing Face to face interview, come warmed up for the interview, the panel with ask you questions, address the question to the person asked as you maintain eye contact with them and involve other members as you look at them without hand movement .The panel wants people that are enthusiastic and you need to bring that enthusiastic as you are speaking.

Sample competency interview question will have ice breaker questions to get you talking such as how was your journey today. Was it full of traffic jam ? Why were you interested in applying for this job? What particular aspect of this job appeal to you when you applied? These very important questions that are frequently asked.  You have to answer with intrinsic value imposition that you are going to bring to the organization but not really what is written in your CV. The employers have already read your CV and they still need to hear more from you.

You may finally be asked with 7 to 8 structured questions before you  are finally invited to ask questions. If you don’t have any questions to ask you the panel asks them to allow you to provide more information.  You can say “ I don’t have a question per se but I would like provide  additional information if it is ok with the panel. You have to add a good reason about why you best fit this position and about your motivation for this position . you can reiterate about the value proposition.
In Competency based interview you will be asked how you work in teams and how you resolve conflict. You need to have examples of how you work in team and how you resolve conflict.  You will also be asked question son value proposition questions. Such as what are the three value that are most important to you? how do these values translate into your work ?

Generally, when a panel is assessing your answers they are looking for two specific things
1.       The depth of the example
2.       The complexity of the example.

The more complex example that you give the higher the chance that you are scoring.  Tell me about a time that you have to resolve between to two set of colleges?

Writing CV is an opportunity to show the hiring person or company what the qualification that you have. Writing resume is about selling you to the employer, the skills, and experience and showing the skills, talents and qualities that you have to best fit the position.
When putting up your CV, you have to include the following

1.      Bio Data: Personal information
It should compose your name, your address and your contact details such as telephone, emails, residence address. You must also include the languages that you speak.

Note that you can decide whether to include your age, your marital status and your nationality.

2.      Career Objectives: this is personal advertisement of your objectives and what you are capable of. It should also compose of :
·        Skills and qualities
·        Work background and achievements
·        Career aims
The CV should start with few interesting line that attracts and capture reader’s attention. It is very nice to use professional words that show achievements.  Avoid over use of simple use of words such as am hardworking and industrious words.  Use words that are machine readable. Most if the Employers use machine to sieve the best CV and application that have the skills that they are targeting.  
When explaining this element be precise and do not be broad about your details . When you are summarizing your career aims, think about the employer you are sending the CV to.

3.      Work Experience
If you have previously worked you have to put it down from the latest to the oldest that you have done. Include if at any point you have left job and involved self employment. However if you are a fresh from graduate you can only add your education background, trainings and workshops that you have done.
You should also include, the date that you have started the job, the day that you have completed, the employers name, the title of the position that you have worked for. You should also provide your duties and responsibilities in each job.
You should always try to relate your skills and experience that is required for the job to yours.

You should write according to the most relevant professional skills gained. Start from the latest to oldest qualification that you have had.

The referees that you are going to indicate you know that you have chosen them to be your referees. You have to include at least one and at most three. If you don’t have any work related referee please choose a responsible person in the community to act that.

There are common interview questions that are asked by the hiring company. These questions are not the only one that expect from job interview. You should be ready for more questions. These frequently asked job interview question that asked are categories in to the following:

Introduction questions. Questions that the employer wants to know how you are, your achievement and what you can do for them.

Academic Background: these are question that are related to level of education attained to qualify for the position.  The professional etiquette and qualities that you have such as role play, leadership, management and communication experiences. There are things that you need to do after the interview process.  Most of the job candidates forget to do this. Succeeding in an Interview is not about evaluating the skills that you have but also applying some interview skills and tactics to pass and beat the other job contestants. It is about building your relationship, good image and linkages with interviewers and the staff in the company. Most of the job applicants who did this succeeded in job interview and have high chances of being called for next interview stages.

When the interview finishes, you don’t have to stand up and just go like that. There is more to do after ending the questions.  As the interviewers stand up and bid you buy what you need to do is that:

1.      Don’t stand up before the interviewers. Let the interviewer pick their stuff unless they have excused you and want to discuss more.

2.      Shake hands with the interviewers. Show some respect to them before leaving. Don’t just disappear impolitely. Show them that you are social that you don’t need to take some time to know about them. Be friendly.

3.      Say thank you for calling you the interview. Appreciate the chance they gave you and let them know that you are happy taking some time with them.

4.      Before leaving the venues get their business cards. This will help you to contact them again to say thank you and may be for future job opportunities in the company.
